Space Odyssey LP by Shamus Coghlan

Many years have passed since the dawning of my Space Odyssey. At least two years had passed from the finishing of Full Of Stars. Full of Stars was the spark in me that said you are now going to start this LP. At that time I only vaguely knew I was moving towards the Space Odyssey but after the second track it had become pretty clear this was the direction I was going with the help of my influencers.

Countless days and nights getting the gear to sequence with the effects and delays until the pictures for each of the Sequences came to life. That special moment where the music is no longer something you are making but part of a larger energy that your are privy to be part of. It is very hard to explain that energy but you will know when you are there as it shows there is something greater than us that we can tap into when we devote all our passion and hone our skills.

This journey brought in my deepest thoughts on the whole process of my music production. With (807) Recordings I made the mission statement “To Destroy Mediocrity”. This really came into question this time with trying to get the vinyl ready for release.

With high costs of pressing vinyl, and the artwork still somehow not being formatted correctly to go to press it left us in the position of should I release the vinyl. A hard question indeed, with many nights pondering this. Not because I think vinyl is superior but more to the point that I had designed the LP to the vinyl format and journey that brings.

Sitting down, falling into the groove of Deep Space and how each track moves into each other then ends, to the hanging moment of turning the record over and moving into Outer Space was all part of the Sequencing and thought put into the LP. Even how loud we cut the LP and playing times to maximize the absolute loudest cuts with zero compression all came into this process. Is it a case of the sum of the parts are greater than the machine? I still stand firm there is something special about the process and need to commit in the analog domain that brings this true.

Still with that said I believe though one can not argue out of ignorance the fact that many more people should have access to this release digitally and with out borders. There was no expense taken on the digital side either. One can not imitate the art produced here over the years with simple shortcuts and everyone involved I applaud you as your experiences and hard work show.

So please come along with me on this Space Odyssey and thank you for listening and being part of the experience.

A Special Thanks to:

Simon Davies: at The Exchange London for mastering and cutting this LP. Simon did a truly excellent job and although I feel the digital is absolutely stellar the vinyl is just IMAX on Film.

Something special there!

Paul Mac: who worked with Simon to first get the Digital ready before cutting and digital masters did an absolutely excellent job and really tied into my vibe straight away. No Compression, none of that making it loud just to be loud stuff here. Just nice deep extractions of the inner grooves.

Vergel Evans: With out you bro this thing would likely sit another 4 year until we got no artwork done. It is funny how we have all these people we know who are friends, and graphics artists that seem to be nowhere around when needed. You got my vision and we will sort out the pressing to 🙂 No Question why you are my Best Man.

Family: My wife Julia of course for putting up with me all these years in our former flat in Dresden with gear all over the place, and Padraig my now 4 year old son who’s coming and birth made me realize the truly important things in life. That includes locking the studio door as truly excellent patches are lost forever. And of course all the Snaps as with out them we would not have had so many life experiences to keep us inspired.

All Moms and Dad’s also as it is because of you I am here and with these questionable talents. You know this stuff didn’t come from nowhere and with my own son I understand what you had to deal with in me all that much more now. And the Dresden mom for putting us up after we got married until well we had been between flats.

Sean Tate, Thanks for supporting and keeping the music going. Don’t think the quality doesn’t matter 😉

Dimitri Pike, you still are the number one DJ and the one who makes my tracks sound better in a mix than anyone. Matter of fact you make any mix better. Keep at it !

Finally to all the ones who worked against me, thank you for giving me the inspiration. I tend to ride better up hills than on a flat land.

Technophile EP (12″, EP)

(807) Recordings second release brings back the dedication of Shamus Coghlan’s quest to Destroy Mediocrity. From the very onset of a-side Truth Serum he releases an all out Sonic bliss of pure unapologetic techno. Fast paced and layered with analog modulation this sets the pace of those who dare to be tested.

Technophile EP :: Truth Serum

Technophile EP :: 180 Grams

180 Grams brings even the most hardened of “Technophiles” back home. With a BIG warehouse jacking beat, layered with deep, dark, cold war Sci-fi sounds you will be into Coghlan’s fantasy . With the same passion that started (807) Recordings this release digs in and farther in a dedication to the “Technophile”.

Short Intro

“… there were these black boxes with names like JBL and Cerwin on them … and some guy named Shamus took these 12” round plates from a box and placed them randomly on 3 of these silver rotating machines … the blue box in the middle his hands and fingers were all over, was the mixer and he was in the zone … I don’t know … I can only recall that there were waves and waves of sound cutting right into you, right through you … every sound had its own character … there were these random flowing personalities being revealed in each of them … then merged into another sound, then another new sound comes through … really tripnotic … and for some reason we were all able to see Shamus come alive as he moved and tweaked each button on the machines, like it was all in the palm of his hands … I felt possessed and emotions ran on many tangents … I turned around and asked my friend what it was we were listening to, he said this was “un-apologetic techno at its best …”
